Passionate About Inspiring Others
When I was young, my father taught me how to conduct experiments like a Scientist. He worked with NASA and was tasked with analyzing the first moon rocks brought back from the Apollo 11 mission, so you bet I listened. He seemed superhuman, able to do math in his head that most people couldn't do in a lifetime - true genius. One day I asked him "Do you know everything?" When he finished laughing, he looked at me with that devilish smile and said "Scott, I know enough to know that I barely know anything at all."
This answer changed my life. I was no longer afraid to ask questions about things I didn't understand, because there's so much THAT person doesn't understand. Even a genius mathematician doesn't know how houses are built, or how a farm works, or how to become an olympic pole vaulter... It's okay not to know something, it's okay to ask questions, and it's okay to not understand. In my studio, students are trained to work hard, uncover their unique talents and encourage the journey to artistry. I've studied with some of the best performers in the world and they were always open to questions. I hope you see the trend.
For over a decade, I've performed operatic leads, served on the board of Opera Company of Brooklyn and taught children, youth, college students and professional musicians. Through the years, I’ve learned why "The Thomas Method" gets such dramatic results:
Most music lessons are simply a lecture, mine are a conversation.
My students are never made fun of for their ideas, for their lack of knowledge or for making a mistake. They are celebrated for playing music, for expressing themselves and for self-discovery. I genuinely want to hear what they're thinking and what they'd like to work towards. Students should expect to work hard but the whole point of music is that it should touch your heart, lessons should be no different. My expertise can help to uncover their gifts and nurture what they love.
Let me share a few examples:
-A young lady was a highly disciplined pianist but wasn't a fan of singing. However, she did love accompanying people singing! Her lessons became about mastering enough Christmas music so she could accompany her whole family who visited. We even made programs with all of the lyrics, so everyone could sing along. Her family was floored and had an exceptionally great holiday. Very proud of her!
-Teaching music at a private high-school in Washington, D.C. Most of the students are the kids of Diplomats, Congressman, business executives etc. A lot in our class had never played instruments before, let alone perform. The class became about learning to read music and each student choosing a different way to contribute to a big school showcase. We ended up with an hour long concert with dancing, Djs, rapping, a singer song-writer getting a standing ovation, a sing along you name it. It was truly spectacular and each student was able to for the first time, truly express themselves to a cheering audience. Feel free to ask me for details, I love talking about student's successes.
-When I taught two brothers whose father had played guitar back in the day we would have "Family Jams!" The brothers played piano, drums and sang while their dad shredded on the guitar. Mom would sing too! I love teaching families how to make music together, why is that such a lost art? Let me tell you, in that moment no rock star alive was more meaningful to that family that day than Dad!
-Many, many more. Confidentiality is first and foremost in my studio so no names or specifics will be given, but I'll happily explain more student successes and how they got there.
